Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Quote

“If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.” – Inspiring Excellence

Though we are challenged with an environment which demands that we and many of our employees are working remotely, it is even more critical that we find ways to connect, support and develop our people. Effective leaders and coaches have highly developed capabilities for building mutually beneficial relationships while challenging folks and inspiring excellence.

You will find that a lot of people talk about coaching but not many of them truly understand the concept and how to effectively incorporate it into their respective businesses in a way that creates significant value. Coaching for employee development involves a discipline and a skill set with some specific and essential elements. These skills must be learned, and then practiced on a consistent basis to be most effective. The most impactful and potent coaching is not just about a transfer of knowledge regarding a particular subject matter. Rather, it is about leaders with a nurturing mindset and the ability to connect with employees on an individual level, in a genuine, caring and inspiring manner. It is about coaches establishing productive personal relationships through which they challenge us, provide new perspectives, and enable individuals to tap into unrealized potential and capabilities.

One of the fundamental elements of good coaching (and impactful leadership for that matter) is that of building genuine relationships that allows the coach to not only educate the minds but touch the hearts of people to inspire and motivate them. I am speaking of a very personal, human connection based on trust and transparency. Sales leaders must develop and challenge individuals, and set high expectations for performance. However, a key success factor in getting this formula to work is that folks truly feel that coaches, as representatives of the business, care about them on a personal level and are looking out for their best interests, including their individual goals, for now and the future. The best coaches (and I’ve had the privilege of being associated with some outstanding ones) do a superb job of setting high expectations for individuals, while also providing the support system and resources required to achieve success.

Businesses with winning sales cultures work diligently to create the kind of nurturing atmosphere that inspires excellence. Such an environment is one in which senior leadership provides support and sets the right expectations which includes: 1) Investing in the development of coaching skills for their managers and 2) Fostering an environment of “People First: This includes, among other things, mutual respect, trust, transparency and a supportive environment for each employee. Said differently, a supportive environment means the employees know that the business leaders have their respective backs.

Coaches in winning sales cultures build authentic and meaningful relationships with employees with the goal of helping each person to realize their untapped potential so that everyone might truly be the best he or she can be.
